ADA-Compliant Steel Grating
If your project is in the United States — or follows US accessibility standards — ADA compliance is not optional. Public sidewalks, ramps, transit platforms, and other pedestrian areas that use steel grating must meet specific requirements for opening size, slip resistance and surface stability.
This guide explains what ADA requires for grating, why standard grating often fails the test, and how to specify ADA-compliant steel grating that passes inspection.
What ADA Requires for Grating
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sets accessibility requirements for buildings and public spaces. Two rules matter most for steel grating:
1. Opening size (ADA 302.3)
- Openings in floor and ground surfaces must not allow passage of a sphere more than 1/2 inch (13 mm) in diameter.
- This is designed to prevent wheelchair casters, crutch tips and canes from catching in the gaps.
2. Opening orientation
- Elongated openings must be placed so the long dimension is perpendicular to the dominant direction of travel.
- This stops wheels and crutch tips from dropping into long slots.
In addition to these, walking surfaces should be stable, firm and slip-resistant — which is why serrated (toothed) grating is commonly specified for pedestrian areas.
Why Standard Bar Grating Often Fails
Standard industrial bar grating uses 30 mm, 40 mm or 60 mm center-to-center spacing. With a 5 mm bearing bar, even 30 mm spacing leaves an opening of about 25 mm — roughly 1 inch. That is double the 1/2-inch ADA limit, so standard grating will not pass ADA inspection for pedestrian walking surfaces.
This is a common and costly mistake: grating ordered for a public project can fail on site, causing rework and delays.
ADA-Compliant Steel Grating Solutions
1. Close-mesh / heel-proof grating
- Bearing bars are spaced tightly so the opening stays within 1/2 inch (13 mm).
- Often called “heel-proof” or “close mesh” grating — prevents heels, casters and canes from catching.
- Available in welded or press-locked styles, galvanized or stainless.
2. Serrated (anti-slip) bearing bars
- Serrated bars add slip resistance, which matters for ramps and wet areas.
- Combines well with close spacing for pedestrian safety.
3. ADA-compliant stair treads
- Stair treads with tight bar spacing and slip-resistant nosing help satisfy ADA stair requirements.
- See our steel grating stair treads for options.
4. Tight drainage covers
- For trench and drainage covers in pedestrian zones, specify close-mesh grating or bar spacing that meets the 1/2-inch rule, with bars oriented correctly for the walking direction.
Where ADA-Compliant Grating Is Used
- Public sidewalks and pedestrian crossings
- Transit stations, bus and rail platforms
- Building entrances and ramps
- Parks, plazas and accessible routes
- Drainage covers in pedestrian areas
For these projects, specify material that matches the environment — galvanized steel grating for most outdoor uses, stainless steel grating for coastal, food or architectural applications.
How to Specify ADA-Compliant Grating
When you order, provide these details so the factory confirms compliance:
- Opening size requirement — state that openings must not pass a 1/2-inch (13 mm) sphere
- Bearing bar size and spacing — choose a combination that keeps openings within the limit
- Bar orientation — confirm elongated openings are perpendicular to the walking direction
- Surface — serrated for slip resistance if the area gets wet
- Material and finish — galvanized or stainless per environment
- Stair treads — include nosing details if treads are part of the scope
Common Questions
What is the maximum gap in ADA-compliant grating?
Openings must not allow passage of a sphere more than 1/2 inch (13 mm) in diameter. The gap between bars must be sized so this rule is met, including tolerances.
Can standard 40 mm spacing grating be used in public walkways?
No — standard 40 mm spacing leaves openings well over 1/2 inch and will not meet ADA requirements for pedestrian walking surfaces.
Is stainless steel grating ADA compliant?
Material does not determine compliance — spacing and orientation do. Stainless grating with compliant bar spacing meets ADA just as galvanized does.
