Safety Steel Grating

Slips and falls are among the most common causes of workplace injuries, and wet or oily walking surfaces are the usual culprit. That is why safety grating — grating designed to reduce slipping — is specified for walkways, platforms, stairs and drainage covers across factories, plants and public spaces.

This guide explains the anti-slip options available in steel grating and how to choose the right one for your environment.

Where Safety Grating Matters Most

  • Factory walkways and production platforms
  • Loading docks and ramps
  • Stair treads and access ladders
  • Outdoor platforms exposed to rain
  • Areas with oil, grease, water or process liquids
  • Pedestrian crossings and public drainage covers

If people walk on it and it can get wet or dirty, safety grating is the right call.

Anti-Slip Options in Steel Grating

1. Serrated (toothed) bearing bars — the standard anti-slip choice
Serrated grating has teeth cut into the top surface of the bearing bars. The teeth bite into shoe soles and provide grip even when the surface is wet or oily. It is the most widely used anti-slip grating for industrial walkways and platforms. See our serrated welded steel grating for specifications.

2. Close-mesh / heel-proof grating
Tightly spaced bars prevent heels, crutch tips, tools and small objects from dropping through. Often combined with serrated bars where both slip resistance and small openings are required — for example pedestrian areas and ADA-compliant walkways.

3. Anti-slip stair treads with nosing
Stair treads combine serrated surfaces with a slip-resistant nosing (front edge). Nosing improves visibility and grip on every step. Explore steel grating stair treads.

4. Bar spacing and orientation
Closer spacing and bars running perpendicular to the walking direction reduce the chance of catching and improve stability.

Galvanizing and Corrosion — the Hidden Safety Factor

Corrosion is a safety issue too. Rusted or thinned bars reduce load capacity and create weak points. Hot-dip galvanized grating resists corrosion for years, which is why safety-critical outdoor grating is almost always galvanized. In coastal or chemical environments, stainless steel grating is the safer long-term choice.

How to Choose the Right Safety Grating

Ask these questions before ordering:

  1. Will the surface get wet, oily or dirty? → Serrated bars are the default.
  2. Is it a pedestrian/public area? → Add close spacing or heel-proof bars; consider ADA opening limits (≤ 1/2 inch).
  3. Is it stairs or a ramp? → Use stair treads with anti-slip nosing.
  4. What is the environment? → Galvanized for most outdoor use; stainless for coastal, chemical or hygienic areas.
  5. What load must it carry? → Match bar size and spacing to the required load (see heavy duty steel grating for high-load areas).

Common Questions

Is serrated grating more expensive than plain grating?
Slightly — serrating is an extra manufacturing step — but the cost difference is small relative to the safety benefit. Most buyers specify serrated for walkways without hesitation.

Can safety grating be used outdoors?
Yes. Hot-dip galvanized serrated grating is widely used outdoors. Galvanizing protects against rust, and the serrations maintain grip in rain.

Does close-mesh grating reduce drainage?
Close spacing reduces open area, so drainage is slower. For drainage covers in pedestrian zones, balance the opening size needed for water flow against the anti-slip and ADA requirements of the location.
