Different Type

How to Select Stainless Steel Grating?

Stainless steel grating is widely used for drain covers, platform walkways, stair treads, industrial guards, and more. Correct selection ensures safety, load capacity, and service life. The following step-by-step guide will help you make an informed choice.

1. Dimensions & Span

  • Installation area: Measure the length, width, and center-to-center distance of supporting beams (or frame edges).

  • Grating size: Choose standard panels (e.g., 1000×1000 mm) or custom sizes based on clear opening. Note: The length direction of the grating should align with the bearing bars.

  • Height (thickness): Select according to span and expected load. Common heights: 25 mm, 30 mm, 38 mm, 50 mm, 65 mm. Larger spans require greater heights.

2. Material & Grade

  • Stainless steel grades:

    • 304: General-purpose corrosion resistance. Suitable for indoor, dry, or mildly humid environments.

    • 316 / 316L: Contains molybdenum, offering superior resistance to chlorides (salt spray, seawater, de-icing salts). Recommended for coastal areas, wastewater treatment, chemical plants, and outdoor high-humidity environments.

    • 201: Lower cost but poor corrosion resistance; not recommended for wet or outdoor applications.

  • Surface finish: Typically pickled or mill finish. Polished or brushed finishes are available upon request, but note that they may reduce slip resistance.

3. Load Capacity & Design

  • Load class: Determine based on application:

    • Pedestrian only: Light duty (2–4 kN/m²)

    • Light vehicles (cars, golf carts): Medium duty (5–10 kN/m²)

    • Heavy trucks, forklifts: Heavy duty (>10 kN/m²; requires thicker bearing bars or closer spacing)

  • Bearing bar spacing: Standard spacing is usually 30 mm or 40 mm. Tighter spacing (e.g., 20 mm) is recommended for high heels, small-wheeled carts, or preventing small tools from falling through.

  • Bearing bar thickness: Common thicknesses: 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm. Higher loads demand greater thickness.

4. Slip Resistance

  • Surface types:

    • Plain (smooth): Suitable for dry, non‑greasy environments.

    • Serrated type: The bearing bars feature serrations, which significantly improve slip resistance. Recommended for oily, wet/slippery, or sloping areas.

    • Additional anti‑slip strips: Rubber or adhesive strips can be added.

  • Note: Serrated grating is less prone to snow/ice accumulation, making it ideal for outdoor or cold‑storage environments.

5. Installation & Fixing Methods

  • Drop‑in or inset: Grating can be placed into a prefabricated frame or recess.

  • Fixing clips:

    • Stainless steel saddle clips: Removable, easy for cleaning.

    • Welding: Permanent installation, more rigid.

    • Bolted connection: Requires drilling holes in the frame; suitable for high‑vibration areas.

  • Removable/liftable requirement: For drain channels or inspection pits, choose hinged or lift‑out grating with a dedicated lifting tool.

6. Accessories & Customisation

  • Frames: Optional stainless steel frames, either integrated or separate.

  • Solid cover plates: Perforated or chequer plates can be supplied when complete closure is needed.

  • Free drainage area: Select different bar spacings according to required flow rate (open area typically 40%–80%).

  • Special shapes: Round, sector‑shaped, or notched grating to fit around pipes or posts.

  • Panel segmentation: Large areas should be divided into smaller panels for easier handling and installation.

7. Budget & Long‑Term Cost

  • Initial cost: 316 stainless steel is significantly more expensive than 304; 201 is the cheapest. Heavy‑duty grating costs more due to thicker bars.

  • Long‑term investment: In corrosive environments, 316 is more cost‑effective than 304 – 304 may start rusting after 2–3 years, while 316 can last 10+ years.

  • Avoid: Choosing cheap 201 or non‑standard under‑spec products (e.g., actual bar thickness thinner than claimed), which leads to premature failure and safety hazards.

8. Reviews & Brand Reputation

  • User feedback: Check reviews under similar operating conditions, especially regarding corrosion resistance and deformation resistance.

  • Certification & standards: Ensure the product complies with YB/T 4001 (China), EN 1433 (Europe), or ANSI/NAAMM (USA) grating standards.

  • Brand reputation: Prefer manufacturers that can provide material test reports (spectral analysis) and load test certificates. Reputable brands are more reliable in bearing bar straightness and weld quality (no cold welds).
