Steel Grating for Platforms

Steel grating for platforms gives maintenance crews and operators a stable standing surface around machinery, tanks, valves and process equipment. Known interchangeably as platform grating, steel grating platform or deck grating, this construction is the workhorse of industrial access — strong enough to carry concentrated loads, yet open so spills, fumes and light pass through.

Platform grating is generally supplied in heavy-duty configurations with larger bearing bars, and is almost always cut to fit around equipment, columns and pipework.

Why Steel Grating for Platforms

  • High load capacity — bearing bars from 40×5 mm upward carry personnel, tools, spares and point loads from machinery.
  • Open flooring — oil, dust and washdown water drop through instead of collecting, keeping platforms clean and less slippery.
  • Ventilation and light — open area reduces fume build-up and lets daylight reach the floor below.
  • Fits around equipment — panels are cut to size with notches for pipe, cable trays and support steel.
  • Lower platform weight — an open grating deck weighs far less than a solid plate deck, reducing the cost of the supporting structure.

Choose by environment

Use our load bearing capacity of steel grating guide to confirm bar size and span before ordering. For heavy-duty structures, the heavy-duty steel grating range uses thicker bars and closer cross-bar pitch for maximum rigidity.

Configurations Worth Considering

  • Serrated bars on platforms that stay oily or wet, especially around machine tools and washdown areas.
  • Close mesh panels where hand tools, bolts or small parts must not fall to the floor below.
  • One-piece cut panels with radius notches around columns — better than site cutting, which removes the galvanized coating.
  • Clips or bolt-down fixing so individual panels can be lifted for maintenance under the deck.

Platform decks are often combined with handrails; see our platform steel grating product page and the full product list for compatible stair treads and railing systems.

Common Questions

What load can platform grating carry?

It depends on bearing bar size, span and spacing. A 40×5 mm bar at 30 mm spacing on a 600 mm span is typical for personnel platforms; heavy equipment or storage areas need larger bars — check our load capacity guide or send us your loading plan.

How is platform grating fixed down?

Panels are welded to support steel, or held with grating clips / saddle clips for removable access. Bolt-down fixing suits vibrating or high-traffic decks.

Do platforms need serrated grating?

Where oil, water or dust make the surface slippery, yes. Serrated bars are a low-cost upgrade that measurably reduces slip risk on working platforms.
